Description

Team Super Cooper

Hi, My name is Cooper and I am Super Orsum.

I have Trisomy 13 Moasic which is an extremely rare Chromosome Abnormality. Only 5% of children born with this survive past their 1st birthday and I turned 7 (Seben) in March!!! Because I am so rare we have no idea what challenges we may face in the future. What we do know is that we will tackle them head on with the support of friends, family, supporters and sponsors.

Please share my journey with me as I overcome obstacles both physically and mentally and try to fit into society like everyone else.

I arrived into the world with my (twin) brother Kase in March 2005. I also have a big brother Mason who is twelve and loves me to bits.

Fairly early on (3-4 months) my mum knew there was something wrong with me as I was in and out of hospital all the time with different problems and not feeding. Everyone told her to stop comparing the twins but she didn’t accept this.

Luckily one day while in hospital we met a lady who requested genetic testing because of my ears being very low and toes being a bit dodgy. It was after a VERY long wait that we discovered I was in fact a little miracle.

I have had various operations for my kidneys, toes etc and we have to keep checking every year on my heart, lungs, kidneys to name a few. These tests are pretty expensive and my family receive no government funding. I have very poor muscle tone which means it takes me twice as much effort and twice as much time to do what others find easy. I can’t hold a pen very well and even though I speak not a lot of people can understand me.

I go to school and I just LOVE it. I have so many friends there. I spent 2 years in prep. My mum says it’s because I wasn’t ready to move to Grade 1 but the real reason is I loved my prep teacher too much. This year I went to Year 1 and it has been very challenging for me. Because of my condition I struggle with not only the physical challenges but the developmental problems as well.

My brain doesn’t work as well as it should. This is why I go to the Special Unit at my school where there are lots of very special ladies that help me. I can make lots of noise but my speech is very delayed so I go to a Speech Language therapist to help me learn how to use my sounds. I also do Riding for Disabled, Gymnastics and Soccer.

I am absolutely adorable and tell people that all the time. Of course they agree. I love playing on the trampoline and doing all the things boys love to do. I train with the squirts at soccer but when I went to play a game I stood in the middle of the field and had no idea what was going on.

I give EVERYTHING a go with 200% effort and refuse to be told I can’t do something.
